Pope Francis establishes the Diocese of Weifang in China, recognizing Beijing's diocesan borders and appoints Bishop Anthony Sun Venjun.

Pope Francis has created a new diocese in China, replacing the former Apostolic Prefecture of Yiduxian with the Diocese of Weifang. This decision tacitly recognizes the diocesan borders drawn by Beijing. The Diocese of Weifang takes its name from the prefecture-level city of over 9 million people in China's central Shandong province. Bishop Anthony Sun Venjun was consecrated and appointed to lead the diocese.
