A chemical spill at Victoria University has been isolated by fire crews.

On Sunday, 2024-01-28, five fire appliances, including a HAZMAT unit, attended Victoria University in Wellington after an alarm indicating strange smells and banging noises in a science lab. Fire and Emergency Shift Manager Chris Dalton stated it appeared to be a reaction of some sort resulting in a temporary closure of the affected lab, with the chemical involved being isolated. The rest of the campus was reported as open for operation following this minor incident. Public health staff were also present at the site.
