Senators, led by John Kennedy, seek reform of the National Flood Insurance Program, set to lapse without reauthorization, to address rising flood risks and decreasing premiums perceived as insufficient.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which has issued almost 5 million policies and has over $20 billion in debt, is facing various challenges which include affordability issues of policies for homeowners, as well as a comprehensive approach to catastrophic events. The program is financially insolvent and has not been reauthorized since 2017. U.S. Senators have introduced a bill aimed at making the program more affordable, by capping rate increases at 9%, providing vouchers for low and middle-class families if premiums become too high, and implementing additional oversight for insurance companies.
