Hunter-led conservation project removes 776 deer from Kaimanawa Forest Park, improving forest health and addressing overpopulation.

A hunter-led conservation project has successfully removed 776 deer from a remote area of Kaimanawa Forest Park, improving the health of the forest, according to Hunting and Fishing Minister Todd McClay. The innovative project, supported by funding from the Government's Jobs for Nature programme and DOC's Wild Animal Management Programme, has helped address the issue of overpopulation in the Kaimanawa Remote Experience Zone (REZ). Due to limited opportunities for hunters to access this area, the project has played a crucial role in managing deer numbers and improving forest health and resilience to climate change, as well as reducing pressure on native ecosystems.
