The new president of Taiwan attributes Nauru's demise to a political ploy by China.

Taiwan has blamed China after the Pacific island of Nauru announced it was severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognising China. The loss of one of Taiwan's few remaining diplomatic allies was seen as immediate retaliation for Taiwan's recent presidential election, during which lawmakers affirmed their commitment to an independent foreign policy. Nauru is now one of just 12 countries recognising Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of China.
