British Columbia police secretly collected DNA from Kurdish community members.

British Columbia police secretly collected DNA from about 150 Kurdish community members in 2018, disguised as tea marketers, to solve the murder of a 13-year-old girl. The DNA was obtained at a Kurdish New Year celebration, where police handed out free tea samples in numbered cups that were later swabbed for DNA. This led to the arrest of Ibrahim Ali, who was convicted of first-degree murder in December. The jury was not informed why the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was monitoring Ali.
