A federal judge has ruled that the execution of Kenneth Eugene Smith, the first ever by nitrogen gas, can go ahead in Alabama later this month. Smith's lawyers had appealed in November the choice to carry out the method of execution, which has never been tried and has been described by the UN as potentially "cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment."
