Judge orders new North Dakota legislative district for 2 Native American tribes.

A federal judge has ordered a new legislative district for two Native American tribes in North Dakota, after the tribes successfully challenged the state's redistricting map as violating the Voting Rights Act. The legislative map created in 2021 was alleged to have diluted the voting strength of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and the Spirit Lake Tribe. U.S. District Court Chief Judge Peter Welte's decision comes after a series of court filings since his Nov. 17 ruling that the state's 2021 redistricting map prevented Native American voters from having an equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice.
