Fires are threatening homes along a railway line near Kirwee, Canterbury, believed to be caused by sparks from a train's brakes igniting vegetation in nearby paddocks. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) is responding to the multiple fires, and police have set up diversions along State Highway 73. KiwiRail is investigating the cause of the fires but suspects it was due to train brake sparks.
