Myanmar has released more than 9,000 prisoners.
Myanmar's military government has announced the release of 9,652 prisoners, including 114 foreigners, to mark the country's 76th Independence Day. The Southeast Asian nation has faced turmoil since the military seized power in February 2021. Among those still imprisoned is Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been appealing sentences adding up to 27 years in detention. It remains unclear if any of the released prisoners include political detainees.
